Introduction

The famous Nazca lines, which can only be seen from the air, were drawn in the desert sands around 600 A.D. and their origin remains an enigma today. The Paracas National Reserve – which includes the Ballestas Islands – is a rich coastal ecosystem that is home to the most magnificent marine fauna. A short distance away are the cities of Ica and Pisco, the wine center and home of Peru’s national drink, respectively.

The desert sands of Nazca reveal treasures of ancient civilizations. Each of these figures extends for more than 500 meters.

Ica, land of cotton and wine, is full of history. In their desert plains, the ancient Peruvians wove splendid tunics of varied colors; they mummified their dead with singular skill; and they drew gigantic lines and figures in the desert as a tribute to the water or to interpret the messages of the Sun, the Moon and the Stars.

The famous Nazca Lines are cut into the rocky desert, not only in the form of parallels and geometric figures, but also in the form of a dog, a huge monkey, birds, a spider and a tree.

This is a short 2-day excursion from Lima to the Pacific coastal city of Paracas and the impressive desert oasis of Huacachina. In Paracas, sail to Peru’s “poor man’s Galapagos” and visit the impressive coastal National Reserve. In Huacachina, combine Sandboarding/Dunebuggying followed by a flight over the mysterious Nazca Lines the next day. A perfect two-day getaway from Lima.

Day 1

Ballestas Island / Huacachina Oasis

3.30 a.m. Report to Avenida Javier Prado Este 1109 La Victoria (alt. Clínica Ricardo Palma) – Cruz del Sur Agency. 08.00 a.m. Meeting at the Embarcadero El Chaco – Paracas. Visit Paracas – Ballestas Islands Once in the port of El Chaco in Paracas, we will depart in modern aircrafts to the Ballestas Islands. On the way to the islands we will observe El Candelabro located in the bay of Paracas and a small guano dock. We will observe the diversity of the marine fauna that inhabits here such as: Pelicans, Humboldt Penguins, Sea Lions, Red-headed Gallinules, Guanayes, Boobies and Whimbrels. 11:00 Hrs. Visit to the Paracas National Reserve, where we will visit the viewpoints of Lagunilla Beach from where we will have a beautiful view of the entire south of the reserve. Free time at Lagunilla Beach to enjoy its white sand and calm waters. Visit to the Paracas Cathedral where our guide will explain the geology of the area since this area is considered the oldest in Peru. Visit to the Interpretation Center of the Paracas National Reserve, we will observe the museum, then we will watch the video and finally we will take a walk to the fossils of the Paracas Bay and the flamingo viewpoint. Then we will continue to Huacachina Lagoon, to enjoy a wonderful sunset in the Iqueño desert. Then we will live an adventure through the desert of Ica on board of tubular cars through the dunes. Practicaremos el famoso deporte del Sandboarding (opcional).

17:30 p.m. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred to the bus terminal – Transfer to Nazca. Pick up from the bus terminal and transfer to the hotel of your choice.
19:00 p.m. Departure to Nazca (Southern Cross). Pick up from the terminal and transfer to the hotel. Overnight at hotel (according to option).

Day 2

Flight over the Nazca Lines

8.00 a.m. Approximately you will be picked up from your hotel. Overflight Nazca Lines (depending on weather conditions): Before boarding the plane, there is a waiting time of 1 to 2 hours. It is recommended that a light snack be taken during this time. Once in the plane we will be able to observe the figures of the Spider, The Hummingbird, The Monkey, The Whale, The Condor, The Hands, and the most mysterious The Astronaut. The flight lasts approximately 30 minutes.
