Waqrapukara comes from 2 Quechua voices WAQRA means “Horn” and PUKARA means “Strength”, then it means Fortaleza de los Cuernos, There are observations that indicate that there are no horns in the fortress, but that they are “The Ears of a Flame”.
The tour takes about an hour and a half walk. The difficulty is medium, you can also do cycling in the area because it is suitable for it as well as see lagoons similar to the Humantay lagoon.
Excursion to Waqrapukara: If you are tired of the traditional tours that take place in Cusco, experience this full day excursion to an imperial attraction known as Waqrapukara; Waqra means horn and Pukara equals watchtower in the Quechua language, so this was a horn-shaped military watchtower built in the Inca period: It is located on top of a very steep mountain at 4,300 m altitude.
Inca Site of WAQRAPUKARA
It is a pre-Inca and Inca fortress. In the pre-Inca period it was a small citadel, for this reason it was called “Llaqta Pukara” where the Qanchi leader and his family lived, it was also used as an astronomical observatory; it had a sanctuary to the God Teqci Pachakamaq Wiraqocha.
First, it was built by the Qanchi ethnic group in the period of the Auqarunas 1500 to 1000 BC. The current construction is from the Inca period, it was built in the Inca period Wayna Qhapaq, with the intervention of architects of that government, also participated Qanchimachu and Ttito Q’osñipa.
Why at the time of the Auqarunas, there is already the need to train men and places warriors to defend the territory conquered by the ethnic group and the tribe. Not only to defend their territory and the leader. In pre-Inca and Inca times, these leaders were called curacas, and in colonial times they were called caciques. In the Purunruna period there was no need for pucaras, because they lived in a place they wanted.
